The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the statements, actions, and art of Wenda Gu in order to prove that the issue of culture is central in his art, which is a phenomenon common in Chinese contemporary art. Wenda Gu was born in Shanghai, China, in 1955, moved to New York in 1988, and has become very active in the international art scene during the 1990s.
