Gender Studies in and on the Asia Pacific

Areas of Research and emerging knowledge

JaneMaree Maher

pp. 1-8

The Asia Pacific region comprises countries in the Pacific Ocean, Australia, New Zealand and the Malay Archipelago. This article examines the diversity of gender studies and research located in universities across the region and outlines key areas of gender research and scholarship. The article focuses on the importance of gender and development studies, feminist work in family formation and women's employment, and indigenous and postcolonial gender scholarship throughout the region. These areas of gender research are central to gender studies pedagogies and knowledges. The need to diversify the voices that contribute to and define feminist scholarship drawing on the expertise of those in the Global South is an on-going and vital challenge both across the Asia Pacific and the world.
